Major Problems You Face with Cooktop
Cooktops fail differently depending on how they make heat, so the first question is always gas, induction or radiant. The second is how the unit is set into the worktop, because on a stone counter that decides how the repair is carried out.
One gas burner will not light
The electrode for that burner, its lead, a blocked port or the valve. A failed spark module takes every burner down at once, so a single dead burner points elsewhere. Spill residue bridging the electrode gap is common and costs nothing to correct.
Burners click continuously after lighting
Moisture or baked-on residue bridging the electrode to the burner cap, a cracked electrode ceramic, or a module that cannot confirm the flame. On sealed-burner cooktops a cap seated a millimeter off its pins produces this reliably.
Induction zone drops out at high power
The generator derating itself. Induction electronics are fan-cooled through a grille, and a restricted intake makes a zone that works on low and quits on high. We check airflow and the fan before condemning a power module.
Induction zone will not detect the pan
Either the pan is insufficiently ferromagnetic or the coil or its detection circuit has failed. We test with a known-good pan first, which settles it immediately. Warped bases also break contact and read as non-detection.
Cracked glass surface
A dropped pan, or thermal shock from a wet pan on a hot zone. A cracked ceramic top is not repairable and is a safety matter on an induction or radiant unit, because moisture reaches the electronics beneath. The glass is replaced, and on some models it is no longer supplied.
Touch controls unresponsive or lighting up on their own
Moisture under the control glass, a failed touch membrane, or the control board. Standing liquid on the control area causes phantom activation, and drying it out resolves a fair share of these without a part.
Radiant element stays on full or not at all
The infinite switch or the surface element. An element stuck at full heat is the switch welded closed, and it is worth attention promptly because the zone cannot be turned down.
Downdraft vent will not rise or will not extract
The lift motor, its gear rack, or the blower. Downdraft units in island worktops fail at the mechanism more often than at the fan, and grease in the track is a leading cause.
Yellow flames or soot on pans
Air-to-gas ratio: blocked ports, a misseated cap, or an orifice sized for the wrong gas after a conversion. Worth taking seriously, since incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide as well as soot.
Error code on an induction cooktop
Manufacturers log codes for over-temperature, coil faults, fan faults and communication between the generator and the control. We read the code against that manufacturer's own documentation rather than a generic list.
How We Repair Your Cooktop
Heat source identified and the supply checked
Gas pressure at the appliance, or the supply legs on induction and radiant. On induction we confirm the unit has the dedicated circuit it needs, since a shared circuit produces intermittent faults.
Zone by zone under load
Every zone taken to full and held, with a known-good pan on induction. Faults that only appear warm are the norm on this appliance, so nothing is judged from a cold test.
Cooling path inspected
On induction and radiant units the fan, the intake grille and the cavity below the worktop. Restricted cooling explains more induction complaints than failed electronics do.
Access planned for the worktop
Units set into stone are released and lifted with the surround protected. On some installations the cabinet below is the only access route, and we establish that before starting.
Verified across every zone
All zones run to full and down to their lowest setting, controls exercised, and gas units checked for flame quality. The 3-month parts and 30-day labor warranty starts then.
Cooktop Parts We Replace
Cooktop parts split by heat source. Electrodes, caps, valves and switches for common units travel on the van.
| Part | What it does, and how it fails |
|---|---|
| Spark module | Fires all electrodes. A real fault kills every gas burner together. |
| Igniter electrodes and leads | Crack or foul; the usual cause of one dead burner. |
| Burner valves | Lose the low-flame setting, so the simmer end runs hot. |
| Burner caps and grates | Warp and mis-seat, distorting the flame pattern. |
| Burner orifices | Gas-specific. Wrong size after a conversion gives yellow flames. |
| Induction coil | One zone stops detecting or stops heating. |
| Induction generator board | Derates under load; often a cooling fault first. |
| Cooling fan | Protects the induction electronics. Its failure looks like a board fault. |
| Radiant surface element | Fails open, or shorts and stays on. |
| Infinite switch | Radiant units. Welds closed and the zone runs at full. |
| Touch control membrane | Loses zones or ghosts inputs, usually after moisture ingress. |
| Ceramic glass top | Replaced, not repaired. Availability is model-specific and worth checking early. |
| Downdraft lift motor and blower | Mechanism failures outnumber fan failures on these. |
Manufacturer parts are the rule here, and the ceramic glass top is the clearest case: it is a structural and a safety component, dimensionally exact to the cutout, and an approximate replacement does not seal. Burner orifices are the same argument for a different reason. Where glass or a generator board has to be ordered, the technician checks availability from your kitchen, because on some model years that availability is what decides repair or replacement.
We Service All Major Cooktop Brands and Models
Induction and sealed-burner cooktops set into stone worktops are most of this work. Each brand page covers that manufacturer's control design and service access.
Luxury and Built-In
Cooktop Repair Cost in Walnut Creek
The service call is $99, and it covers the trip and the diagnosis at your address. Beyond that we do not publish price ranges. The reason is worth stating plainly: a dead zone is a cleaned electrode on a gas unit, a coil on an induction unit and an infinite switch on a radiant one — three different parts and three different amounts of work behind the same words. A number quoted before anyone has seen the appliance would be a guess, and a guess that later moves is worse than no number at all.
Once the technician has found the fault you get one price for the whole job — parts and labor together, with the 3-month parts and 30-day labor warranty included — and nothing proceeds until you agree to it. If you decide against the repair, you pay the service call and nothing else.
What moves the price on this appliance
- Gas, induction or radiant. Induction carries generator and coil assemblies that no gas cooktop has, and they are the expensive items.
- How the unit is set into the worktop. A cooktop bedded into stone is released and lifted with the surround protected, and on some installations the only access is from the cabinet below.
- Whether the ceramic glass is involved. Glass is a model-specific part and on older units it may no longer be supplied at all.
- Whether a downdraft mechanism is part of the appliance. The lift assembly is a separate system with its own failure modes.
- Whether the part is carried. Electrodes, caps, valves, switches and elements are on the van; glass, coils and generator boards are ordered.
When we will tell you not to repair it
When the ceramic top is cracked and the glass is no longer supplied for the model, when the cooktop deck has corroded through around the burner wells, or when a generator board plus multiple coils have failed on an induction unit past its tenth year. You get that answer on site and pay the service call, not a repair we do not believe in.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Cooktop?
The NAHB and Bank of America life expectancy study, published in 2007 on 2005 data, does not list cooktops separately. Its nearest figures are 15 years for gas ranges and 13 for electric. We give those as the closest published reference, with their date, rather than inventing a cooktop-specific number.
The working rule is the 50% rule: if the repair costs more than half the price of an equivalent new unit, and the appliance is already past the middle of its service life, replacement is usually the better spend. Two things bend that rule on this appliance. First, a gas cooktop is mostly valves, electrodes and castings, all individually replaceable, so age alone rarely settles it. Second, replacement is constrained by the cutout in the worktop: a new unit has to match it, and on a stone counter widening a cutout is a stonemason's job, not an appliance one.
Signs that point to replacement
- Cracked ceramic glass on a model where the top is no longer supplied.
- A cooktop deck corroded through around the burner wells, which cannot be sealed.
- Generator board and several coils failed together on an ageing induction unit.
- Repeated moisture damage to the control area from a failed perimeter seal.

How to Keep Your Cooktop Running Longer
Cooktops fail for two reasons: what gets spilled on them, and how well the electronics underneath can breathe. Both are manageable.
Seat the burner caps on their pins
After every clean, press each cap down and feel it locate. A cap a millimeter out of position distorts the flame, makes the burner click after lighting and burns yellow. This is the most common cooktop complaint that is not a fault at all.
Keep the induction intake grille clear
Induction electronics are cooled by a fan drawing air through a grille, usually at the rear or underneath. If the cabinet below is packed with stored pans or the grille is furred with dust, the generator protects itself by cutting power — which owners experience as a zone that dies on high.
Never put a wet pan on a hot zone
Thermal shock is how ceramic tops crack, and a cracked top on an induction or radiant unit is a replacement rather than a repair, because moisture then reaches the electronics beneath. Dry the base of the pan first.
Wipe liquid off the control area promptly
Standing liquid over a touch control causes phantom activation and, left long enough, works past the seal into the membrane. If the controls are behaving strangely and the surface is wet, dry it thoroughly before assuming a fault.
Clear grease from a downdraft track
Downdraft vents ride on a rack or track that collects cooking grease, and the lift motor is what pays for it. Wiping the visible track and the vent housing a few times a year is what keeps the mechanism from stalling.
For running costs and efficiency, the federal guidance at energy.gov is the neutral source.
Cooktop Repair FAQ
My induction zone works on low but shuts off on high. What causes that?
Almost always restricted cooling rather than a failed zone. The generator electronics sit under the cooktop and are fan-cooled through a grille, and when the airflow is blocked they derate to protect themselves — which you experience as a zone that dies under load. We check the fan and the intake path first, and only then look at the power modules.
Can a cracked glass cooktop be repaired?
No. The ceramic top is a structural and a safety component, and on an induction or radiant unit a crack lets moisture reach the electronics underneath. It is replaced rather than repaired, and the part is specific to the model. On some older units the glass is no longer supplied, which is worth finding out early because it decides repair against replacement.
Why does my gas burner keep clicking after it has lit?
The spark module is not seeing a confirmed flame, and the usual reason is residue or moisture bridging the electrode to the burner cap. A cap that has been put back slightly off its locating pins does the same thing. Both are free to correct, and we check them before looking at the module.
My cooktop is set into a stone worktop. Can you still get to it?
Yes. The unit is released and lifted with the surround protected, and on some installations the working access is from the cabinet below rather than from above. Either way that access is real labor before diagnosis, and it is why we ask how the cooktop is installed when you book.
Do you repair downdraft cooktops?
Yes. Worth knowing that on these the failures cluster in the lift mechanism rather than the fan: the motor and its track carry cooking grease, and a stalled mechanism is more common than a dead blower. We diagnose the vent as a separate system from the cooking surface.
The touch controls light up on their own. Is the board gone?
Not always. Standing liquid over a capacitive control panel causes phantom activation, and the panel behaves normally again once it is properly dry. If the surface is dry and it is still ghosting inputs, then the membrane or the board behind it is the fault. We establish which before quoting a part.
What does a cooktop repair cost?
The service call is $99 and covers the trip and the on-site diagnosis. We do not publish price ranges, because on this appliance the same symptom spans a cleaned electrode at one end and a generator board plus glass at the other. Once the fault is known you get one price for the whole job, and nothing proceeds until you agree to it.
