Why Miele Appliances Need a Specialist
Miele is engineered to be maintained rather than replaced, and that cuts both ways for a repair. The mechanical parts are heavier than the category norm and the spare-parts horizon is long, so a fifteen-year-old machine is usually worth fixing. What you do not get is a component-level fault code: Miele's own support articles decode the sensor and door faults precisely, and then say only “there is an electronic fault” for a whole group of others. Diagnosis on those has to be done with a meter, not with a code chart.
The T1 heat-pump dryers are the clearest example of why brand knowledge matters here. Miele itself attributes the F66 fault “in many cases” to lint filters or the plinth filter in front of the heat exchanger not having been cleaned. That is maintenance rather than failure, and a technician who does not know to look behind the lower plinth panel first will go hunting for a component that is fine.
On the dishwashers, the drain pump and non-return valve are reached from inside the tub rather than from underneath, which is unusual. The Waterproof system is also a hard interlock rather than a soft warning: when F70 trips, the drain pump keeps running with the door open and only stops when the plug is pulled. Knowing that saves a confused half hour and a wet floor.

Common Miele Problems We Fix
The faults below are the ones Miele's own support documentation decodes, which is also where the reliable part of any Miele diagnosis starts.
Dryer stops with F66
Miele attributes this “in many cases” to lint filters or the plinth filter in front of the heat exchanger not having been cleaned. Its other documented causes are an overloaded drum, a blocked ventilation grille under the door, and high room temperature. We clean and check the heat-exchanger path before looking at anything electrical.
Dryer will not finish a cycle (F55)
The load is still not dry after the 180-minute maximum on a residual-moisture program. Miele lists an overfull drum, laundry that went in too damp, soiled lint filters, and laundry that was not spun enough. Genuine component faults are further down that list than owners expect.
Dryer sensor faults F1 to F4
Short or open circuits on the refrigerant temperature sensor and the drying air temperature sensor. These four are decoded precisely by Miele, so they are among the faults where the code actually tells you which part to measure.
Dryer door faults F30 and F36
F30 means the door signal and the door contact signal disagree; F36 means the reed switch in the door contact is faulty. Both present to the owner as a machine that will not start.
Dishwasher not draining (F11)
Miele's own remedies, in order: clean the triple filter, clean the drain pump and the non-return valve, and remove kinks from the drain hose. The pump sits beneath the non-return valve and is reached from inside the tub.
Dishwasher water intake fault (F12 or F13)
Supply not fully open, a clogged intake filter, or pressure below 4.35 psi. On a fully integrated machine the supply valve is often in the adjacent cabinet and has been closed by someone working on the plumbing.
Waterproof system tripped (F70)
A hard safety interlock. Miele's instruction is to close the faucet, switch the machine off and pull the plug, because the drain pump keeps running until you do. This is a service call, not an owner reset.
Washer heating fault (F20)
Two documented meanings. Either the Thermostop has activated, which is normal behavior and pauses the timer until temperature is reached, or there is a genuine fault in the heating circuit. Telling them apart is the whole job.
Refrigeration fault F0
Miele's wording is direct: a technical fault you cannot remedy yourself. On MasterCool columns we work through sensing, airflow and the sealed system in that order, because the code gives no component.
Panel-ready door out of alignment
Not a coded fault, but the commonest complaint on integrated Miele appliances. Custom panel weight works on the hinges over years, and once the door sits proud a dishwasher will not latch and a refrigerator will not hold temperature.
Miele Error Codes and What They Mean
Miele publishes one support article per code, and it decodes some precisely while saying only “there is an electronic fault” for others. Below is what its own documentation states.
This matters when you are comparing quotes. Miele's articles for F38, F39, F40, F41, F45 and F46 all give the same text — an electronic fault the owner cannot remedy — with no component named. Anyone who tells you confidently which board has failed on an F41 without measuring anything is guessing.

Miele Parts and Availability
Miele's published spare-parts position is one of the reasons these machines are worth repairing late in life, and it is also why we will fit manufacturer parts on them rather than an approximation. On the heat-pump dryers in particular, the sensors are matched to a control that Miele has calibrated, and a sensor with a different resistance curve gives a machine that dries badly with no fault code at all.
One thing worth knowing before you compare service quotes. Miele's own dishwasher documentation describes a Program Correction path, entered through an indicator marked PC, that lets a technician update the machine to use new technology — and states plainly that its aim is to prevent untrained service personnel working on Miele products. We are an independent workshop and we do not have that path. What we do have is the mechanical and electrical side, which is where the faults actually are, and we will tell you when something genuinely needs the factory channel rather than pretending otherwise.
